Coronavirus death in Kolkata: 57 year-old man from Dum Dum dies in private hospital

A 57-year-old man from Kolkata’s Dum Dum who had tested positive for Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) died on Monday afternoon. This is the first death from COVID-19 in West Bengal. Dum Dum lies in the nothern fringes of Kolkata.

The 57-year-old had been admitted to Salt Lake AMRI Hospital since March 16. He had acute respiratory symptoms and had been put on ventilation since March 19. He was the most vulnerable among all the COVID-19 patients, due to his age. There are six persons admitted to Beliaghata ID Hospital in Kolkata right now who have tested positive. This makes the number of deaths in India eight.

Family members had not disclosed any information about either the travel history of the 57-year-old, nor whether he had come in contact with anyone who had travelled abroad. One of his family members however, had returned from Italy. Doctors say that since this crucial information had not been disclosed to the hospital, many others had become vulnerable to COVID-19 as they had come in contact with him.

All his family members as well as doctors who had come in contact with him are either admitted to hospital, or are on home quarantine. Some family members are now admitted to the isolation ward of MR Bangur Hospital but their test reports are yet to come.
