Centre recalls Bengal chief secretary hours after PM-Mamata Banerjee meeting row
Earlier, 3 IPS officers from Bengal were recalled.
The Central government on Friday evening issued an order to recall West Bengal chief secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay from the state, hours after a row broke out over a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Many felt this was a fallout of the row.
Just four days ago, Bandyopadhyay’s tenure was extended for three months. The Centre has asked the Bengal government to send Bandyopadhyay to the Department of Personnel and Training’s office in Delhi by May 31 morning 10 AM.
Earlier today, Banerjee skipped a meeting with PM Modi that was called to assess the impact of Cyclone Yaas. She had a short meeting with him at the Kalaikunda airbase of Bengal where his flight landed. She handed him a report, sought permission from the PM to leave for a meeting in Digha. Later, the Centre reportedly alleged that she had kept PM Modi and Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar waiting for half-an-hour.
Ahead of the Assembly election earlier this year, three Indian Police Service (IPS) officers from Bengal were recalled by the Centre. The Union Home Ministry is the controlling authority for IPS officers and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) comes under the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
While the order is implemented with the concurrence of the Centre and state government, it is not yet known whether the state government will agree to the decision.
