West Bengal government moves High Court against CBI, Governor submitting report to the Centre

The West Bengal government on Monday filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court against the CBI’s attempts to question Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar at his residence on Sunday evening. The court did not give an immediate hearing and listed the matter on Tuesday.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has called the CBI’s attempts to question Kumar a political witch-hunt led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government at the Centre an attempt to ‘organise a coup’ in the state.

Banerjee has since staged a dharna at the Metro channel in Kolkata’s Esplanade from last night against the Central government’s use of the CBI for political gains.

Meanwhile, the state governor Keshari Nath Tripathi is expected to submit a report on the matter to the Centre. According to reports, he received a phone call from home minister Rajnath Singh to discuss last night’s episode and was requested to submit a report.
