BJP leader Chinmayanand interrogated in student rape case

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Chinmayanand was questioned by a Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Uttar Pradesh police for seven hours in connection with a rape case.

A complaint was lodged by a student against the 73-year-old Chinmayanand of raping and blackmailing a law student for over a year. Chinmayanand is a former minister who served in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

The student in her complaint has said that Chinmayanand got her admitted to a law school, suggested to her that she move to a hostel where he had filmed her without her knowledge and blackmailed her using the film. The woman also said that she was forced to give massages to Chinmayanand and at times been taken to him at gunpoint by his aides. The BJP leader runs several ashrams and institutions.

The case emerged when the woman had posted on Facebook profiles of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, without naming Chinmayanand, seeking their help. Her father however, named the BJP MP. After this she had gone missing before being tracked down in Rajasthan. She then appeared in the Supreme Court for a closed hearing.

The SIT was being accused earlier of reluctance in filing a case against the powerful leader or even questioning him. But this was refuted by the SIT that said that the delay was only due to some health issues of Chinmayanand.
