Opposition parties’ appeal to the Election Commission to bring back ballot papers for 2019 elections likely to be discussed today

The Congress has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to bring back the ballot papers for the Lok Sabha polls of 2019, the ANI reported. The EC is scheduled to meet representatives of political parties later in the day.

The appeal from the Congress is not new though. The Congress had earlier too asked the ECI to allow ballot papers in 2019 because of fears of tampering of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The ECI though has maintained that EVMs cannot be tampered with. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) too has refuted allegations of EVM tampering.

The Congress though is not the only party appealing to the ECI in these lines. In fact, the Opposition parties have repeatedly made this demand, including the Trinamool Congress (one of the first political parties to make such a demand), the Left parties, the Shiv Sena, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and others.  Among the non-National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parties, only the AIADMK, Biju Janata Dal and a few others are not making such a demand.

Under this backdrop, the meeting with the ECI will bring up possibilities of detailed discussions on this issue.
