COVID-19: Kolkata Film Festival 2020 to be held from Nov 5-12 with restrictions, only in govt halls

There was uncertainty over whether the Kolkata International Film Festival will be held this year, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, it has now been confirmed that the KIFF will be organised, though in a much reduced scale. The dates have been altered too – usually the festival started on November 10, but this time it will be held from November 5 to 12.

This is the 26th year of the festival, which was started in 1995. According to officials, this year the festival has been designed keeping in mind social distancing and other COVID-19 protocols.

It has been proposed in an “online mode” primarily, said officials. However, the details are being worked out. The inauguration will take place on November 5 at Netaji Indoor Stadium, with limited number of invites to be sent out. Only few halls – only those run by the state government – have been selected as venue. Here too, the number of seats will be limited. As of now – three halls of Nandan (I, II and III), Sisir Mancha, Rabindra Sadan, Nazrul Mancha in Rajarhat and Okakura Bhawan of Salt Lake have been selected as venue.

The theme country this year is Italy. The government authorities are currently in the process of selecting films and also deciding on whether guests will be invited from outside Kolkata.
