RJD nation-wide strike today to protest Muzaffarpur shelter home case

The Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) has called for a nation-wide strike on Friday demanding the resignation of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, after the incidents of sexual harassment of inmates of a shelter home in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur came to light.

The Bihar chief minister meanwhile, has expressed worry about the Muzaffarpur shelter home case and said institutional mechanisms should be in place to prevent such things from being repeated.

Eleven employees of a child shelter home in Muzaffarpur were arrested on July 24 for allegedly sexually harassing the inmates – 30 girls – over a period of time. The police raided the vicinity after receiving the information to rescue 44 girls.

The Supreme Court on Thursday took suo motu cognizance in the Muzzafarpur case while Left parties and groups in Patna called for a state-wide bandh in Patna against the shelter home scandal on the same day. The protests were supported by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) members. According to reports, the protesters blocked railway tracks and several roads around the vicinity of the city.

Nitish Kumar has also been criticised by the RJD for allegedly shielding the accused in the shelter home case after a photo of him felicitating Brijesh Thakur, the prime accused and owner of the shelter home, emerged.

Investigations have been taken over by the CBI from the Muzzafarpur Mahila Police Station where the case was registered on May 31, under Section 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy), 376 (outraging the modesty of a woman), 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 4, 6, 8, 10,12 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POSCO).
