Rahul Gandhi tweets his resignation letter, says new president to be selected soon

Rahul Gandhi today said “it is an honour for me to serve the Congress Party, whose values and ideals have served as the lifeblood of our beautiful nation”, and tweeted his resignation letter. He said he owed the country “and my organisation a debt of tremendous gratitude and love”.

This is an indication that his resignation may have been finally accepted, with various reports suggesting a new party president will be chosen within a week. Rahul Gandhi had submitted his resignation letter after the May 23 Lok Sabha poll results in which the Congress fared poorly. The party managed to win only 52 of the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha elections. He quit as the party chief two days later. However, there was pressure on him to continue as the party chief.

But today’s development suggests that his resignation may have been accepted by the party leadership.

He told reporters today that a new president will be chosen soon but that he was not part of the process of selection as he had resigned already. In his resignation letter – that he had written earlier but tweeted today – Rahul Gandhi mentioned that as the party president, he was responsible for the loss in the 2019 election.

He has also mentioned that though it was suggested to him to nominate the next Congress president, he felt it would be incorrect of him to be involved in the process. He had suggested to the Congress Working Committee (CWC) “to entrust a group of people with the task of beginning the search for a new President”.

However, he added that he would “continue to fight for the ideals of the Congress Party with all my strength”.
