Amid intense war of words between Bharatiya Janata Party and the Trinamool Congress over last week\u2019s violence in Siliguri during a BJP programme, there has been a change in the top police administration in the area. And the significant move has been taken while chief minister Mamata Banerjee is touring north Bengal.<\/p>\n

The state government on Tuesday made IPS officer DP Singh the new police commissioner of Siliguri, in place of Tripurari Arthav who was serving in the position so far. Singh has been serving as additional CP-III in Kolkata Police.<\/p>\n

Singh, an IPS officer of 2002 batch has served in important positions in Kolkata Police and in different parts of the state. He has been commissioner in Howrah and Asansol-Durgapur, and police superintendent of Cooch Behar and Darjeeling.<\/p>\n

Last Monday, the BJP had alleged that their party worker died had during clashes with the police in Siliguri during a party programme. The state police and chief minister Mamata Banerjee said that the person had died in shotgun firing, but the police do not use such weapons. This was to indicate that the BJP worker had not been killed in police firing. But the controversy did not end there, as a war of words continued for over a week. Officials indicated that this may have led to the transfer of the CP, though the government authorities claim that this is \u201croutine\u201d transfer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
