Fake govt notification announcing five-day holiday for Eid under government scanner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A fake government \u201cnotification\u201d \u2013 purportedly issued by the West Bengal finance department \u2013 announcing a five-day holiday during the upcoming Eid has been doing the rounds since yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The state security advisor, Surajit Kar Purakayastha said that the government has learnt about this fake document being forwarded through social media and officials are trying to trace its origin. \u201cWe will take action,\u201d he told The Bengal Story. \u201cThere are some elements trying to spread fake news for some time. We will trace the origin and take firm action,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The fake \u201cnotification\u201d document, which shows it has been issued by the West Bengal Finance Department\u2019s Audit Branch, reads, \u201cIn order to celebrate Eid festival, which falls on <span data-term=\"goog_759178702\">12 June to 15 June, 2018<\/span>, in a befitting manner, the Governor is pleased to declare State Government holiday on <span data-term=\"goog_759178703\">12 to 15 June, 2018<\/span>, in addition to <span data-term=\"goog_759178704\">16 June, 2018<\/span> which has already been notified as a public holiday.\u201d There is the West Bengal government\u2019s \u201cBiswa Bangla\u201d logo on top of the page to claim \u201cauthenticity\u201d. The fake document has also been signed by an official of the state finance department.<\/p>\n<p>According to those \u201cforwarding\u201d the photograph of the note through WhatsApp, \u201cthis announcement means that like Durga Puja, the Mamata Banerjee government is also announcing a five day holiday on Eid\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Communal riots to election manifesto, demonstration outside Lalbazar to the panchayat elections \u2013 there has been a surge of fake news on social media in West Bengal in recent times.<\/p>\n<p>There have been arrests for spreading fake news, but that hasn\u2019t acted as any deterrent. The Bengal government is now working on a <a href=\"https:\/\/thebengalstory.com\/english\/wary-of-fake-news-and-posts-west-bengal-government-starts-preparing-new-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\">law <\/span><\/a>to take strong action against spreading fake news.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, in April this year, even the BJP\u2019s panchayat election manifesto contained images of desecrated idols that turned out to be photographs taken from clashes in Bangladesh in 2013 and 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A fake government \u201cnotification\u201d \u2013 purportedly issued by the West Bengal finance department \u2013 announcing a five-day holiday during the upcoming Eid has been doing the rounds since yesterday.
