The Dada Saheb Phalke award winner passed away recently, on November 15, 2020. Banerjee wrote: \u201cRemembering Soumitra (Da) Chattopadhyay on his birth anniversary. He was a legend, who left his mark on everything he did. We miss his glorious presence. I was privileged to recently inaugurate an exhibition featuring paintings, film posters and costumes done by Soumitra\u00a0Da. Am touched by the warmth and love of his family\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Born on January 19, 1935, Soumitra Chatterjee\u2019s career in film spans for over six decades. He is best known for his films that were directed by Oscar-winning film director Satyajit Ray. Chatterjee worked in 14 of Ray\u2019s films including <em>Apur Sansar<\/em> (The World of Apu) in 1959, which was his debut film. He also worked in Ray\u2019s <em>Charulata<\/em>, <em>Abhijan<\/em>, <em>Aranyer Din Ratri<\/em>, <em>Ashani Sanket<\/em>, <em>Sonar Kella<\/em>, <em>Joy Baba Felunath<\/em>, <em>Hirak Rajar Deshe<\/em>, <em>Ghare Baire<\/em>, <em>Shakha Prashakha<\/em> and <em>Ganashatru<\/em>. Chatterjee is the first Indian film personality to receive the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France&#8217;s highest award for artists. He also won the Legion d&#8217;Honneur, France&#8217;s highest civilian award.<\/p>\n<p>He also worked with celebrated film director Mrinal Sen in <em>Akash Kusum<\/em>. Chatterjee has acted in memorable roles and is remembered for his brilliant performances in a number of Bengali films including Tapan Sinha\u2019s <em>Kshudhita Pashan<\/em>, <em>Jhinder Bandi,<\/em> <em>Atanka<\/em>, Asit Sen\u2019s <em>Swaralipi<\/em>, Ajoy Kar\u2019s <em>Otol Joler Ahobhan<\/em>, <em>Saat Pake Bandha<\/em> and so on.<\/p>\n<p>He received the Padma Bhushan in 2004, and won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India\u2019s highest award for cinema.
