{"id":1408,"date":"2018-06-20T14:06:46","date_gmt":"2018-06-20T08:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thebengalstory.com\/english\/?p=1408"},"modified":"2018-06-22T16:06:30","modified_gmt":"2018-06-22T10:36:30","slug":"researchers-find-two-bacteria-that-can-help-reduce-arsenic-concentration-in-the-sunderbans-soil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thebengalstory.com\/english\/researchers-find-two-bacteria-that-can-help-reduce-arsenic-concentration-in-the-sunderbans-soil\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers find two bacteria that can help reduce arsenic concentration in the Sunderbans soil"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>A group of researchers from Kolkata\u2019s Bose Institute have found two microbes that can reduce arsenic in plants.<\/p>\n<p>The study was led by the institute\u2019s assistant professor of biochemistry department Abhrajyoti Ghosh.<\/p>\n<p>West Bengal has the maximum number of arsenic-affected persons in the country \u2013 over one crore in eight districts (South and North 24 Parganas, Nadia, Howrah, Hoogly, Bardhaman,Malda, Murshidabad), according to a report, submitted in the Lok Shobha in March 2017. The arsenic scare in West Bengal is very real.<\/p>\n<p>During the study to monitor the influence of microbes in the growth of plants in saline condition, the researchers discovered two microbes \u2013 \u201c<i>Kocuria flava<\/i>&#8221; and \u201c<i>Bacillus vietanamensis<\/i>\u201d \u2013 in the rhizosphere (the microbiological zone in direct contact with the root of the plant) of goran (<i>Ceriops decandra<\/i>) trees, the predominant vegetation of Sundarbans. These species churn out chemicals, helping in the plant growth in saline environment apart from protecting the plants from arsenic exposure.<\/p>\n<p><i>Kocuria flava<\/i> can tolerate 35 mm of aresnite \u2013 the ion form of arsenic \u2013 while the other one, <i>Bacillus vietanamensis<\/i>, has the limit of 20 mm of arsenite.<\/p>\n<p>As arsenic is present in the irrigation water of several West Bengal districts, plants are \u201cbreathing in\u201d the contaminated water in their tissues, which are killing plants if the arsenic concentration goes beyond the tolerance level.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>The researchers injected the two microbes in the soil on which rice seeds grow and found that the microbes not only helped the plants to grow but also helped them to withstand the salinity of the soil as well as helped in curbing the arsenic concentration in soil. \u201cThough the microbes breathe in the arsenic, it can resist its impact on the plants,\u201d said Ghosh.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Is it possible to reduce arsenic intake of the soil with the help of these microbes? Ghosh said, \u201cTill now, there is no mechanism in the world to reduce arsenic concentration in the soil.
