Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee took oath as the West Bengal chief minister for the third time today, on May 5, 2021. Her party won a landslide victory in the Assembly elections, winning 213 seats, while the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 77 seats.<\/p>\n
After the swearing-in, Banerjee said that her top priority is to control COVID-19 and she had called a meeting on the pandemic at the state administrative headquarters Nabanna, at 12.30 PM. She also appealed to “all political parties” to “maintain peace and tranquility”. “Please ensure proper law and order. Strong step against those who create trouble,” Banerjee said.<\/p>\n
Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar congratulated CM Mamata Banerjee, saying that “It is not usual to win for a third term, and I hope that the CM will rise to the occasion and take steps beyond politics to bring in peace and order.”<\/p>\n
Banerjee responded saying that the law and order in West Bengal has been under the Election Commission set-up for the past three months, and now that she had been sworn in and is in charge, she would ensure that no one is spared for creating trouble in the state.<\/p>\n
The CM said that she was sorry that more than 50 people could not be invited in order to maintain COVID protocol, and once the pandemic had been dealt with, there would be a big celebration at the Brigade Parade ground.<\/p>\n
BJP chief in Bengal, Dilip Ghosh, did not attend the swearing-in ceremony, reportedly to protest the attack on BJP workers across the state allegedly by Trinamool Congress workers. Former CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and BCCI president Saurav Ganguly were also invited. But Bhattacharjee has been unwell for some time now, and Ganguly did not attend the programme either. Several top Trinamool leaders, Mamata Banerjee’s nephew MP Abhishek Banerjee and the party’s political analyst Prashant Kishor were present at the programme.<\/p>\n
