Droupadi Murmu \u2013 the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance\u2019s (NDA) nominee, today filed her nomination for the post of India\u2019s next President. She filed her nomination in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several BJP and alliance leaders. The presidential elections are scheduled on July 18, and the current President Ram Nath Kovind\u2019s tenure will be over on July 24.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed her name for the nomination, seconded by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Next set of proposers were chief ministers of BJP ruled states and third proposers were MLAs and MPs from Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. The fourth set were MLAs and MPs from Gujarat.<\/p>\n
Leaders of Biju Janta Dal (BJP) and YSR Congress \u2013 both non-NDA parties \u2013 were also present to back her nomination. Murmu hails from Odisha, where BJD is the ruling party. Droupadi Murmu is the first woman tribal leader to file her nomination for the post. She is former Governor of Jharkhand apart from being a former minister in Odisha.<\/p>\n
