The incident, which left the survivor with severe burns and temporary vision loss, is believed to be the first acid attack conviction in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additional District and Sessions Judge Sylvie Z Ralte pronounced the guilty verdict against BSF jawans Nilanjan Das and Dinesh Kumar on Friday. The court reached its decision after hearing testimonies from 18 witnesses, including forensic and medical experts. The quantum of punishment is scheduled to be announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Brutal Cover-up Attempt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the prosecution, the crime occurred on July 16, 2017, when the survivor and her friend were foraging near the Gaskata stream, close to the Silsury West border outpost along the Bangladesh border. The two women were intercepted by the BSF personnel, who were assigned to food supply duties at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the survivor&#8217;s friend stepped away briefly, Das and Kumar sexually assaulted the woman. In a bid to erase evidence and blind her, the attackers poured acid over her face. Villagers discovered the woman later and alerted her family, who subsequently filed a police complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doctors at the Aizawl civil hospital later confirmed the severe acid burns and sexual assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Long Road to Justice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators from the Mizoram police tracked the suspects to the 181 Battalion BSF camp by matching duty rosters. On September 5, 2017, the survivor successfully identified both men during a formal test identification parade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case also involved the tragic death of the survivor&#8217;s companion. Following an extensive search, her body was found near the crime scene on July 17 with fatal acid burns.
