The Bengal Story Bureau:<\/strong> NEW DELHI: The Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena is facing a major internal crisis after six of its nine Lok Sabha MPs skipped a parliamentary party meeting in New Delhi on Thursday. The absentee lawmakers defied a formal party whip, prompting the leadership to initiate disqualification proceedings and issue show-cause notices against the rebels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut confirmed that the absent parliamentarians have been given a seven-day deadline to explain their actions. The mass absence effectively confirms widespread speculation that the six MPs are preparing to switch their allegiance to the ruling Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Show-cause Notices and Disqualification Process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The mandatory meeting was called by Shiv Sena (UBT) Lok Sabha leader Arvind Sawant and chief whip Anil Desai at the party’s parliamentary office at 11 am on Thursday. Only three Lok Sabha members attended the gathering: Sawant, Desai, and Rajabhau Waje. Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut was also present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The six absentee Lok Sabha MPs are Nagesh Aashtikar, Sanjay Deshmukh, Sanjay Jadhav, Sanjay Dina Patil, Omprakash Rajenimbalkar, and Bhausaheb Wakchaure. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Raut described their absence as a violation of the party whip and an act of betrayal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They will be given a show-cause notice, answers will be sought, and we will move towards disqualifying their membership,” Raut said. He added that the party is already preparing the formal documentation to submit to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Anti-defection Math and Operation Tiger<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Under the anti-defection law laid down in the Tenth Schedule, at least two-thirds of a party’s legislative strength must switch sides together to avoid disqualification. With exactly six out of nine Lok Sabha MPs reportedly rebelling, the breakaway group meets the precise legal threshold required to form a separate bloc or merge with the Shinde faction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political circles in Maharashtra have dubbed the defection move Operation Tiger. Sources indicate that the six rebel MPs have already signed a letter seeking a formal merger with the Shinde-led Sena and have submitted it to the Lok Sabha Speaker. However, leaders from the Shinde camp have publicly questioned the legal validity of the Uddhav faction’s whip. They argue that internal party directives carry disqualification consequences only when they relate to voting inside the House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deepening Maharashtra Political Crisis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The ongoing rebellion marks the third major political split in Maharashtra within the last four years, following the original Shiv Sena division in 2022 and the Nationalist Congress Party fracture in 2023. If the six MPs successfully merge with the ruling National Democratic Alliance, it will further consolidate the BJP-led coalition’s numbers in the lower house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Uddhav Thackeray camp now waits for the seven-day notice period to expire. If the rebel MPs fail to respond or provide unsatisfactory explanations, the party will formally ask the Speaker to cancel their Lok Sabha membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
