This is no swish café or a vibrant public space where people meet and order their quiche and coffee over long conversations.

The Saldanha Bakery’s factory and outlet is located on Nawab Abdur Rahman Road, off Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road.

The ground floor is where cakes are baked, and the products are sold from the first floor. This is where packets of flour and eggs, the smell of butter and fresh cake baking in the oven fills the room – as if you’ve entered someone’s house where people are preparing for a party.

And yet, or perhaps that’s exactly why people come here to pick up cakes and keep coming back again and again. It tastes fresh and is good value for money.

When owner Denzil Saldanha was getting on in years, his daughter Debra – who was working in a bank – quit her job to run the business. Now, her daughter Alisha, is involved. Alisha went to London after her graduation in Kolkata, became a pastry chef and has added new products. The owners say there will soon be a Saldanha café.

[8
{"0":"post-2395","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-bengal
["GET
