Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at a public meeting in West Bengal\u2019s Thakurnagar on Saturday said that the number of people who had come to attend his programme was an indication why Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee resorted to violence.<\/p>\n
\u201cI saw the crowd here and realised that this is the reason why Didi resorts to violence. Thank you for coming to attend the meeting,\u201d Modi said, adding that \u201cthose who ask to be democratic, themselves kill innocent people.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister apparently had to cut short his speech because of the possibility of a stampede. After he left the venue, there were reports that several people had been injured.<\/p>\n
Thakurnagar is the hub of the Matua community \u2013 estimated at approximately 35 lakh \u2013 who came to Bengal from the erstwhile East Pakistan during the 1950s chiefly due to religious persecution. Binapani Debi, popularly known as Boroma, is the Matua matriarch and has major influence over the Matuas. The Matuas have influence over a number of Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister said it was unfortunate that the Bengal villages haven\u2019t got attention despite so many years of Independence. The Centre is trying its best over the past four and a half years, he said.<\/p>\n
At the rally, Narendra Modi urged the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress to support the government in the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter Independence, many people came back to India. They had to as Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis and Christians have nowhere else to go, but India. That\u2019s why we are bringing the citizenship law. I urge the Trinamool Congress to support the Bill in Parliament,\u201d he said today.<\/p>\n
At Durgapur, where Narendra Modi was in his second public meeting, as part of the BJP\u2019s \u201cGanatantra Bachao\u201d (Save democracy) programme, he was critical of the Mamata Banerjee government on various issues, including development.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
