Salt Lake Mayor Sabyasachi Dutta has put his foot down on the instruction of his party \u2013 the Trinamool Congress \u2013 asking him to step down from the position.<\/p>\n
Earlier this week \u2013 on Tuesday \u2013 Trinamool Congress councillors of the Salt Lake municipality (also known as the Bidhannagar municipality) sought a no-confidence motion against Dutta. The no-trust vote will be tabled on July 18. The senior leadership is upset with Dutta as his actions have repeatedly embarrassed the party.<\/p>\n
Altogether 35 Trinamool Congress councillors led by deputy Mayor Tapas Chatterjee signed the motion and submitted it to the municipality chairperson Krishna Chakraborty. The state municipal affairs minister Firhad Hakim had issued a whip to the party councillors on it.<\/p>\n
Dutta is learnt to have sought legal opinion in order to counter the no-trust motion brought against him and whether the party can at all, legally, take the step against him.<\/p>\n
Dutta has been cause for embarrassment for his party for several months now. He has been constantly meeting his former colleague, now Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mukul Roy. In the past one week, he met Roy twice despite warnings from Trinamool leaders.<\/p>\n
Dutta, also the lawmaker of Rajarhat-New Town, has said these meetings with Roy were courtesy visits. But minister and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said that if Dutta has any self respect, he should leave the party on his own. Hakim said that there was no question of meeting leaders of those political parties whose workers were attacking and killing Trinamool Congress workers. \u201cIf you belong to Trinamool Congress, you must stand by your workers, not meet leaders of those parties whose workers are killing our workers,\u201d the Kolkata Mayor said earlier this week.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat Sabyasachi Dutta has been doing for months is embarrassing for the party and that\u2019s exactly the reason he has been doing it. He has been given a number of chances, and I tried a number of times to mediate and protect him. But now, he has gone too far. The party should take action against him,\u201d Hakim has said.<\/p>\n
Last week, Dutta had been party of an agitation in Salt Lake against the state government and dared the party to take action against him. He addressed a rally attacking state power minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay.<\/p>\n
Since then, it has been a head-on fight between the Trinamool Congress leadership and the Salt Lake Mayor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
