The ruling Trinamool Congress, Left parties and the Congress today passed a joint resolution opposing the National Register of Citizens (NRC). A discussion on the matter took place in the state Assembly today after which the resolution was placed in the House.<\/p>\n

Implementation of the NRC in Assam on August 31, has left out 19 lakh people from the list, who are likely to be put into detention centres.<\/p>\n

All political parties, except the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pleaded for a discussion on the issue in the Assembly. After Assam, there are possibilities of the NRC implementation in several other states including in West Bengal. Opposing the resolution, the BJP staged a walkout.<\/p>\n

The Trinamool Congress has decided to take up a state-wide agitation opposing NRC in Assam. Mass protests will be held on September 7 and 8, and on September 12, a protest rally will be organised from Chiria More to Shyambazar in north Kolkata, in which the Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is expected to be present.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
