Former Indian cricket team captain, Sourav Ganguly, is all set to take over as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The 47-year-old cricket star filed his nomination during the day in Mumbai. However, there will be no election, as he has been unanimously chosen.<\/p>\n
Brijesh Patel was the earlier choice as BCCI chief, while Ganguly was approached for the post of vice- president which he had reportedly turned down. But in a dramatic turn of events, with the backing of an influential Union Minister and following subsequent meetings, Ganguly emerged as the choice for the top post. Now, it\u2019s only a matter of time before the decision is formalised at the board\u2019s annual general meeting on October 23.<\/p>\n
Talking to journalists, Ganguly has said that he sees this as a great opportunity to mend the image of the BCCI. \u201cObviously, it\u2019s a great feeling as I have played for the country and captained the country. And I am taking over at a time when BCCI has not been in greatest of position for the last three years. Its image has been hampered quite a lot. It\u2019s a great opportunity for me to do something good,\u201d Ganguly told news agencies on Monday.<\/p>\n
He also said that his priority would be to look after the financial condition of first class cricketers in the country following his election to the post. \u201cWe will speak to everyone first as we take a decision but my biggest priority will be to look after first class cricketers,\u201d Ganguly said.<\/p>\n
He also said that whether unopposed or not, \u201cthere has to be responsibility as it is the biggest organisation in world cricket.\u201d\u00a0This is the first time in its 91-year-old history that a former captain will be the body\u2019s president.
