An IPS officer from Maharashtra quit his job to protest the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) which was passed in Rajya Sabha yesterday after being cleared by the Lok Sabha earlier on Monday.<\/div>\n
The officer, Abdur Rahman, is posted as the special inspector-general of police in the Human Rights Commission of Maharashtra. Rahman posted two tweets yesterday, one of which contained the photo of his resignation letter and the other, his stand on Citizenship Amendment Bill and appealing to people to come out in protest against the Bill.<\/div>\n
The first tweet read, “The #CitizenshipAmendmentBill2019 is against the basic feature of the Constitution. I condemn this Bill. In civil disobedience, I have decided not to attend office from tomorrow. I am finally quitting the service.”<\/div>\n
The resignation letter said that he had applied for voluntary retirement back in August but it was rejected by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The letter further alleges the government of rejecting his application for voluntary retirement “in haste, by not applying mind, with clear prejudice, unfairly and abusing power of authority and discretion” as there was no pending departmental enquiry against him.<\/div>\n
The officer had then moved the Central Administration Tribunal in Mumbai challenging MHA’s decision. Rahman then goes on to state firmly in his letter that, should his plea of voluntary retirement be rejected, he will not attend office from today, in which case the very letter could be accepted as his resignation.
\nIn the second tweet, condemning the CAB Rahman said, “This Bill is against the religious pluralism of India. I request all justice-loving people to oppose the bill in a democratic manner. It runs against the very basic feature of the Constitution.”<\/div>\n
The accompanying photo voiced his stand clearly on the Bill saying, “The whole idea behind the Bill is to divide the nation on religious and sectarian lines. It creates fear among the people belonging to the Muslim community. It also compels Muslims to leave their faith and adopt some other religion to save their citizenship.” In the statement, he further called for the people asking them to challenge the Bill in the Supreme Court.<\/div>\n
His statement read, “I humbly request the people belonging to the poor and people of deprived sections i.e. SCs, STs, OBCs and Muslims to oppose the Bill in a democratic manner as it is going to harm them the most. I also request tolerant, secular and justice loving Hindu brothers who have idea of a prosperous and united India to oppose the Bill. I further request activists and members of Civil Society Groups to challenge it in the Supreme Court, if at all it is finally passed and becomes an Act.”<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
