{"id":8245,"date":"2020-01-24T11:52:36","date_gmt":"2020-01-24T06:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/34.22.110.190\/english\/?p=8245"},"modified":"2021-01-05T03:09:14","modified_gmt":"2021-01-04T21:39:14","slug":"the-economist-says-pm-modis-latest-initiatives-threaten-to-do-damage-to-indias-democracy-are-likely-to-lead-to-bloodshed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thebengalstory.com\/english\/the-economist-says-pm-modis-latest-initiatives-threaten-to-do-damage-to-indias-democracy-are-likely-to-lead-to-bloodshed\/","title":{"rendered":"The Economist says PM Modi\u2019s \u201clatest initiatives threaten to do damage to India\u2019s democracy &#038; are likely to lead to bloodshed\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The Economist<\/em>, in its January 23 edition titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/leaders\/2020\/01\/23\/narendra-modi-stokes-divisions-in-the-worlds-biggest-democracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">&#8220;Narendra Modi stokes divisions in the world&#8217;s biggest democracy&#8221;<\/span><\/a>, has said that &#8220;India&#8217;s 200 million Muslims fear the prime minister is building a Hindu state&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The article, described as \u201cIntolerant India\u201d, criticises the Central government led by Narendra Modi on the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens saying that it \u201cimperils the inspiring idea of India as the world\u2019s largest democracy\u201d. \u201cAlas, what has been electoral nectar for the BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party] is political poison for India,\u201d the article observes, adding that by undermining the secular principles of the Constitution, the PM\u2019s initiatives \u201cthreaten to do damage to India\u2019s democracy that could last for decades. They are also likely to lead to bloodshed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It says that all this would \u201cdistract attention from awkward topics such as the economy, which has struggled since the\u00a0BJP\u2019s thumping election victory last year\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the article also mentions that \u201cBecause of India\u2019s first-past-the-post electoral system and a divided opposition, the\u00a0BJP won its outright majority in parliament with just 37% of the vote\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There is mention of the fact that the NRC \u2013 the system of compilation of citizens to hunt for \u201cforeign interlopers\u201d \u2013 affects all 1.3 billion people in the country and could drag on for years, \u201cinflaming passion over and over again\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Economist<\/em> also questions the \u201chuman cost\u201d of all this. \u201cFrom time to time the stoking of anti-Muslim sentiment leads to massacres like the one in Gujarat, in which more than 1,000 people were killed. By perpetually firing up Hindus and infuriating Muslims, the BJP makes fresh bloodshed more likely,\u201d the article mentions.<\/p>\n<p>It also mentions some aspects of criticism that the Prime Minister has faced from Opposition party leaders in the country, especially his mention of Pakistan. According to <em>The Economist<\/em> article, \u201cWith his warlike rhetoric about Pakistan, his head-cracking in Kashmir and his flagrantly biased approach to citizenship, the prime minister has raised the zealots\u2019 expectations. He may not want to take things too far \u2014 he has a country to govern \u2014 but they will have no such compunction,\u201d the article observes. \u201cMr Modi should look for other paths to voters\u2019 hearts,\u201d says the article.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling party\u2019s reaction has been caustic, as expected. The party hit back, with BJP leader Vijay Chauthaiwale \u2013 the party\u2019s foreign policy-in-charge \u2013 called <em>The Economist<\/em>, \u201carrogant\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought the Brits had left in 1947! But the editors of @TheEconomist are still living in colonial era.
