Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday made an announcement on the trust that will supervise the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The step is being taken as per the instruction of the Supreme Court. The PM made the announcement in Parliament today.<\/p>\n

However, with just two days left for the Delhi elections \u2013 scheduled for February 8 \u2013 questions were being raised on whether this is in keeping with the model code of conduct.<\/p>\n

However, the Election Commission has said that no permission was required from them as the Supreme Court order says that the deadline for the trust is February 9 (Sunday, a day after elections are scheduled in Delhi) and the government has to file a compliance report on it.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy government has decided to set up a trust called Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Skhetra that will take decisions independent on the construction of a Ram temple and related issues,\u201d PM Modi announced in the Lok Sabha today. The BJP MPs shouted \u201cJai Shri Ram\u201d as Modi sought support from all for the construction of the temple. He said that the cabinet has prepared a detailed plan for the construction.\u00a0The PM said that the Uttar Pradesh government had given clearance for the land to be handed over to the Waqf Board.<\/p>\n

In November 2019, the apex court had passed a historic order giving the disputed land to Ram Lalla and giving a five-acre plot in an alternative area to the Sunni Waqf Board for a mosque. A three-month period had been given to the government for setting up a trust for a temple at the site.
