Such a databank will allow the civic body to keep a track of the number and types of plants, birds, water bodies, aquatic animals in the city. It will help in preserving the ecological balance in the city which has been severely compromised in recent times.
Students from various colleges and the members of several non-profit environmental organisations will participate in the data collection work.
The work is being taken up in 37 wards of the city initially and will gradually be carried out in all 144 wards. A meeting of the biodiversity board was held on Monday at the KMC’s headquarters on SN Banerjee Road. Students and teachers of Botany and Zoology departments from 15 colleges of the city were present at the meeting.
The databank will also conduct studies on the types of trees planted in the city to prevent uprooting during storms.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked KMC authorities to submit a report on the city’s biodiversity within March. However, as the civic polls are due in April, officials say that the work of databank may not be completed within the deadline given by the NGT.

[8,11
300,67,165,108

0":"post-8520","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-bengal","8":"category-editors-choice","9":"tag-biodiversity","10":"tag-kolkata","11":"tag-kolkata-municipal-corporation","12":"tag-west-bengal-news
["GET
