Shiromani Akali Dal Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Gujral \u2013 whose party is an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre \u2013 has written to the Delhi police commissioner Amulya Patnaik (with copies sent to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal), informing him about Delhi Police\u2019s inaction during the recent clashes in northeast Delhi. Naresh Gujral is son of former Prime Minister IK Gujral.<\/p>\n
Thirty-five persons have been killed in the clashes since Sunday, in which over 200 people have been injured. Gujral said in his letter to Shah that he had requested Delhi Police to help 16 Muslims who were trapped in a house in northeast Delhi\u2019s Gonda Chowk of Maujpur area on Wednesday night when a mob was trying to enter. He mentioned in his letter that he had informed police that he was a Member of Parliament and had even been given a complaint number, but no action was taken. It was due to the help of some Hindus neighbours that the 16 persons trapped in the area could be taken out to safety, and not due to police intervention.<\/p>\n
Gujral said that he had called 100 to lodge a complaint and told the operator that he is an MP and explained the \u201curgency of the situation\u201d. He said he also gave the operator the phone number of the person who had called him seeking help so that the matter could be treated with utmost urgency. \u201cI received a confirmation from the Delhi Police that my complaint had been received along with the reference number 946603\u2026 However, much to my disappointment, no action was taken on my complaint and those 16 individuals received no assistance whatsoever from the Delhi Police\u2026If this is the situation when a Member of Parliament makes a complaint personally, it is not surprising that certain parts of Delhi continue to burn while the police stands by apathetically,\u201d Gujral wrote in the letter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
