The National Conference leader had been detained seven months ago following the abrogation of Article 370 that granted special status to Kashmir.<br \/>\nEarlier this week, leaders of eight opposition parties had submitted a resolution to the Centre demanding the release of all political leaders in Kashmir. The opposition leaders said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government is trying to silence &#8220;democratic dissent&#8221; by &#8220;coercive administrative action&#8221;.<br \/>\nFarooq Abdullah&#8217;s son Omar Abdullah and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti, both former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir, were also detained, apart from several others.<br \/>\nShortly after his detention, Farooq Abdullah was charged with Public Safety Act (PSA), 1978 which allows the government to detain an individual for up to two years without trial.
