Mamata Banerjee on P Chidambaram case: the way matter was handled is sad, but not commenting on legality
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee today said that the manner in which former Union Home and Finance minister P Chidambaram was arrested last evening was “sad and depressing”.
Chidambaram was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation from his New Delhi residence amid high drama, in which officials of the agency scaled the boundary walls of the building to enter the premises.
“I am not commenting on the legality of the matter… But the way the matter was being handled, it is very depressing and sad and bad also,” she said. Banerjee said this in Digha of East Midnapore district where she is on a two-day visit.
She said that “sometimes the process is incorrect”. “Mr Chidambaram is a senior politician, former Home and Finance minister of the country,” she said. Banerjee added that there are four pillars of democracy and “democracy is crying now” and that “we are missing democracy in our country now”. The four pillars were democratic institutions, Election Commission, judiciary and the media, she said.
The Bengal CM added that the media had totally turned into a spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and even what should be told on television channels were being recorded and sent to the channels. She said that she would prefer to not comment on the judiciary.
According to the investigating agencies, Chidambaram facilitated bringing in of foreign funds into the television company INX Media in 2007 and his son Karti Chidambaram received kickbacks for it. The Delhi High Court refused to grant him anticipatory bail and he failed to get immediate relief from the Supreme Court. The matter will be heard in the court on Friday.
