Assembly elections: counting in Bengal, Kerala, Assam, Puducherry & Tamil Nadu begins

Election was held in 8 phases in West Bengal.

The counting of votes for Assembly elections in four states – West Bengal, Kerala, Assam and Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry began at 8 AM today.

Voting was held in Bengal in eight phases – which started on March 27 and ended on April 29. Assam voted in three phases and elections for Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry took place in a single phase on April 6.

In Bengal, the total number of seats is 294, and the majority mark is 148. For Kerala, the total seats is 140 and the majority mark is 71. For Assam, the total is 126 with the majority mark being 64. In Tamil Nadu, the total seats is 234 and the majority mark is 118. In Puducherry, the total seats is 33 (which includes three nominated members) and the majority mark is 17.

Due to the huge spread of COVID-19, the Election Commission has barred the entry of polling agents into the counting centres without a negative Covid-19 test or both doses of vaccination. The EC has also banned taking out victory processions.
