The newly released Hollywood movie Voyagers is leaked online to download, the movie leaked by famous piracy site Isaimini. is voyagers an oversimplification of lord of the flies in space, yeah it is? The story unfolds on a spaceship where a group of young people is on their way to colonize a distant planet. However, they have not been raised in a normal way since the journey is going to take over 80 years and chances are only their grandchildren will actually get to colonize this planet. These young people were kept away from regular society and the outside world in general so they don’t miss earth.

On top of that their feelings and emotions are being artificially suppressed through a daily administered substance. What could go wrong right naturally once a few of the teens figure out what’s going on and stop taking this substance things start getting complicated, none of this is a spoiler by the way all of this is in the trailer and actually happens within the first 15 to 20 minutes of the film. According to the writer-director Neil Berger, the film is about human nature and who we are at our core, and with that in mind, you might start wondering if voyagers an oversimplification of lord of the flies in space yeah it is. This sounds like a pretty good concept for a sci-fi thriller even though this is an idea that has been explored many times before it’s something that could potentially be done in an interesting way.

Do voyagers have something interesting to offer that depends on your expectations? Thematically there really is nothing new here and the ideas Neil Berger mentions boil down to a few lines of dialogue that are pretty basic and lack any kind of nuance, but as far as thrillers targeted at the young adult audience go this is actually one of the better ones. the cast is pretty solid there is ty Sheridan whom you probably remember from ready player one and the recent x-men movies among other things there’s lily rose Depp whom you might have seen in the king there’s Finn whitehead from Dunkirk and black mirror Bandersnatch those three are the leading trio and there is also colin Farrell who is unfortunately underused but still good to see.

The issue though is that they are given some really questionable choppy dialogue to work with which makes some of these scenes come off really awkward especially in the beginning. The first act of the film tries to cram so much setup and exposition in as little time as possible that it just does not flow well, and because they’re so focused on setting up for the main events there is zero actual quality time spent with these characters so as a result when the thriller part kicks in as a viewer you’re going to be wondering why you’re supposed to care about these teenagers in the first place. On top of that, it does not help that some of the supporting cast performances are not amazing, I will say though once we got past all of this setup and got to what voyagers is actually about the movie found its footing and got significantly better, it really started embracing its contained sci-fi thriller nature the events started unfolding more naturally and the alienating sterile visuals of the inside of the spaceship added to the overall effect.

I do want to go back to the idea of addressing human nature which is what this movie is trying to do
confirmed by its writer-director, that did not work unfortunately let’s assume for a minute that you are on board with the setup which is already questionable but let’s suspend our disbelief there. Even though it’s obvious that raising a group of colonizers without normal human interaction and isolated from the world is a really bad idea and is essentially a taking time bomb, but let’s just go with it the movie then tries to sell the audience on this very black and white concept that following the rules blindly and suppressing your emotions was pretty much working just fine and the alternative is chaos because humans are inherently evil and will follow their worst urges.

What no! the problem of the situation isn’t lack of rules or human nature it’s the fact that you didn’t raise these kids to be normal humans. at no point were they taught how to interact as normal people because they were pretty much engineered and raised to problem solve in an isolated environment. Judging by the choppy setup they weren’t really nurtured or loved and instead of teaching them how to deal with their emotions anger, frustration, impulses, attraction, the joy they had their feelings and emotions suppressed by a drug, of course, most of these teens turned into selfish and aggressive bullies when they suddenly we’re overwhelmed by their hormones and their emotions, that’s the problem here not that basic human urges and emotions are going to make you into a movie isn’t really interested in exploring that and that’s unfortunate you could say that I’m expecting a little bit too much from a young adult thriller, however, if you are going to position yourself as a film that addresses human nature as a concept.

Then you have to bring in character depth and you have to bring in nuance. Otherwise, as evident in this film you are going to end up with surface-level ideas that are very black and white, the choice should not be to obey the rules blindly or descend into chaos, so that’s where I am with voyagers the bottom line is if you just take it as a sci-fi thriller you don’t think too hard about it and you are only here for the ride. It looks neat and it will do the job but it has a lot of wasted potentials and with better writing and better characters it really could have been something a lot more special, or maybe I am asking too much of a thriller meant for the young adult audience. but if that’s the case Hollywood should really treat this demographic better because they are capable of being smarter than this.

For me, this was a 7 out of 10. it could potentially be fun to see on the big screen or just as a popcorn thriller at home but it is unlikely to leave any kind of lasting impact.
