West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 4:30 pm on Wednesday. Banerjee landed in New Delhi on Tuesday evening and has a series of meetings with various political leaders in the capital for three days.
Before leaving, Banerjee said that she needs to go to Delhi to discuss various projects and funds for the state, name change of West Bengal, to talk on the issue of large-scale merger of the public sector banks and merger of other public sector undertakings.
Banerjee said that in a democracy, both the Central and the state governments are elected by the people and both were duty-bound to work for the people. “Since the Central government is in Delhi, the President, Prime Minister are in Delhi, we have to visit the capital from time to time,” she said, adding that she had not visited Delhi for quite some time now. “I stay mostly in Kolkata and don’t go anywhere. But sometimes, for work one needs to go to Delhi,” she said.
This is Banerjee’s first meeting with Narendra Modi since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) formed the government at the Centre for the second time. The Bengal CM will return to Kolkata on September 21.
