Incidents of cow vigilantism unacceptable, says Supreme Court

Mentioning the incidents of cow vigilantism unacceptable, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said mob violence should not be linked to any religion or caste, as “a victim is a victim”. The apex court further ordered all the states to take proper measures to stop such incidents.

A three-judge bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud directed the states to ensure nobody can take law into their own hands.

The apex court in September last year directed all the states and union territories (UTs) to appoint special officers to keep an eye on such cow vigilant groups along with putting an end to such violence. The CJI also asked to file compliance reports.

Meanwhile, the Centre had shifted the onus on the state governments saying law and order is a state matter. Following which the apex court asked the Centre whether they are authorised to ask states to crack down on cow vigilantes.
