People of all faiths will form a human chain in Kolkata on Republic Day to protest the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The initiative has been taken by Interfaith Foundation India, an organisation of people from all religions. Representatives of the organisation met at the Archbishop House during the weekend to decide on the matter.
The human chain will extend from Jadavpur in the south eastern part of Kolkata to Shyambazar five-point crossing in the north of the city. The chain – which will have people of all religions holding hands – will symbolise unity and solidarity of people against CAA which is being seen as a divisive law that seeks to award citizenship on the basis of religion.
The chain is to extend along the road from Jadavpur to Park Circus from where it will lead to AJC Bose Road at Mullickbazar-Park Street crossing. The chain will then move along the Sealdah flyover to Shyambazar via Rajabazar.
It will continue to stand for 15 minutes on one side of the entire stretch of the road. The final route of the chain and other arrangements are being fine tuned.
The Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Kolkata, Dominic Gomes has said that they planned to hold the protest on Republic Day as it is an important day for the citizens of the country with respect to the Constitution. Various organisations that have already staged protests in the city against CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) may also join in to participate in the human chain. The organisers have appealed to the people of Kolkata to take part in it.
