The Supreme Court will deliver the verdict on the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar card tomorrow. There were several controversies last year on linking the card with different government services, bank accounts, cellular services etc.

In March this year, the top court had extended indefinitely the linking of the 12-digit biometric card with bank accounts and mobile numbers, in an interim order, till the judgment on the pending petitions was pronounced.

There are several petitions that challenged the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar card, and the Supreme Court had reserved its verdict in May this year after hearing of the case went on for several months.

Among other things, the court was examining the notion of violation to the Right to Privacy. The government had made Aadhaar compulsory for a number of government schemes and programmes, welfare measures and so on such as PAN card, bank accounts, cellphone services, passport etc. But petitioners have said among other things that there was the possibility of data breach. The government though had said that data breach wasn’t possible and it was safe.
