Court summon for Amit Shah in case lodged by Abhishek Banerjee

It relates to a defamation case of 2018.

A court in West Bengal has summoned Union Home Minister Amit Shah in connection with a case lodged by Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee. A special court for MPs and MLAs in Bidhannagar – adjoining Kolkata – summoned Shah “to appear personally/by pleader” on February 22 at 10 AM.

Shah’s address has been mentioned as 6 Muralidhar Sen Lane, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s headquarters in West Bengal, in Kolkata.

BJP sources said that lawyers will decide whether or not he would appear personally. A BJP leader from West Bengal said that the legal “attack” would be responded to legally.

Trinamool Congress sources said that the matter concerns a BJP rally in Kolkata’s Mayo Road on August 11, 2018, in which Shah had reportedly made allegations against Abhishek Banerjee for involvement in various chit fund scams. On August 28, a defamation case was filed by Banerjee.

Abhishek Banerjee has taken legal steps against other BJP leaders too for allegations they have made in public meetings against him. He has publicly stated that he would accept legal action if allegations made against him by the BJP leaders can be proved. However, the BJP leaders, including Shah, have said that the proof of the allegations would be provided by investigating agencies.
