Bengal CM drops three ministers from cabinet

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday dropped three ministers – Churamani Mahato, James Kujur and Abani Joardar – from the state cabinet.

Abani Joardar, who was in charge of the correctional homes (jail) administration, refugee and rehabilitation, was dropped due to health issues, while backward classes welfare minister Churamani Mahato and tribal development minister James Kujur were reportedly punished for Trinamool Congress’ poor show in their constituencies during the recent rural (panchayat) election.

Mahato, lawmaker of Gopiballavpur constituency in Jhargram and Kujur, lawmaker from Kumargram constituency in Alipurduar failed to deliver, say party insiders. The area from where they were elected performed poorly in the recent elections.

A Trinamool Congress insider said that Banerjee may announce new names for these three departments after the party’s core committee meeting on June 21.
