Tamil Nadu heavy rains: 15 dead from wall collapse, schools closed, alert in 6 districts

Heavy rain for the last three days has led to 15 deaths in Tamil Nadu, with alert sounded in six districts. Rainfall in likely to continue on Monday, and schools and other educational institutions will remain closed in the six districts. Over the last three days, another six persons have been killed in rain related incidents.

A wall collapsed because of heavy rains in Coimbatore early on Monday, killing 15 people. Operations are on to rescue those trapped under the debris.

Heavy rains have flooded large parts of Tamil Nadu since Saturday and alert has been sounded by the regional meteorological centre for the six districts of Tiruvallur, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Cuddalore. Of these, Thoothukudi has been worst hit. The schools in these districts will remain closed today due to heavy rains being predicted.

The heavy rains are a result of a cyclonic circulation near Cape Comorin region of the Indian Ocean. The state government has deployed over 600 pumps to drain out the water, and nearly 200 relief camps have been set up with over 1,000 people evacuated from various places.
