Activist Teesta Setalvad granted bail by Supreme Court

She has been in jail for over two months.

Activist Teesta Setalvad, who has been in jail since June over allegations of a “conspiracy to destabilise the Gujarat government after the 2002 riots”, was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court. The court said that the police had got enough time to interrogate her.

The court had said yesterday that there is “no offence in this case over court which bail cannot be granted”, that too when “she is a lady”.

The petition for bail and quashing of the FIR will continue in High Court. She has been in jail for more than two months and no chargesheet has been filed. Setalvad is to be released after bail formalities and has to submit her passport for which she would have to be produced in court. She has been asked to cooperate with the investigation.
