Eleven migrant labourers from West Bengal’s Murshidabad district returned to the state on Friday from Delhi, which has seen violent clashes since Sunday, leading to the death of over 30 persons.
The labourers landed in Howrah on Delhi-Kalka Mail at around 10:30 am on Friday, from where the Government Railway Police (GRP) made arrangements to take them back to their homes. The labourers, who are aged between 25 to 36, hail from Trimohini village of Mursidabad’s Nowda.
The labourers said that they had to spend three days without food amidst the violence that had raged northeast Delhi since Sunday. The labourers had managed to escape a violent mob and return to their one-room accommodation in Gonda Chowk which is one kilometre away from the riot-hit area.
After remaining locked up for the next 48 hours till Tuesday, they had successfully called up a Kolkata based voluntary organisation. The organisation then contacted Berhampore Congress MP Adhir Chowdhury who arranged for their return. The labourers were rescued by the police on Wednesday.
Chowdhury tweeted on Thursday reassuring the family of the labourers that they were returning safely.
