J&K: Truck driver killed in stone-pelting in Anantnag, one arrested, say police

The Jammu & Kashmir Police said that a truck driver was killed on Sunday evening as he was attacked with stones by protestors at Bhijbhera of Anantnag district. The police said that the truck had been mistaken for a vehicle of the security forces personnel.

“The stone pierced the pane & injured the driver in head. He was rushed to nearby Bhijbhera hospital where from he was referred to SKIMS Soura. He, however, succumbed to his injuries & was declared brought dead. The stone pelter has been identified and arrested,” the Jammu & Kashmir Police wrote on its official Twitter account. A murder case has been registered.

The truck driver, identified as Noor Mohammed, is a resident of Zradipora Urnhall of Bhijbhera. According to the police, a few days back, a girl was seriously injured “in a stone pelting incident in downtown Srinagar. A case has been registered in that case as well.”

A large number of restrictions have been imposed in Jammu & Kashmir since August 5, when the Centre decided to withdraw the special status given to the state. It was split into two union territories. Telephone lines and internet facilities were withdrawn (and connected in certain pockets) to prevent law and order problems, according to the Centre. A huge contingent of security forces have been deployed in the area.
