Special hearing at AIIMS on Unnao rape case

A special court hearing was arranged at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi on Wednesday for hearing the statement of the Unnao rape survivor. The teenager was allegedly raped by former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Kuldeep Singh Sengar.

Last week, the Delhi High Court had ordered the special hearing at AIIMS, after being asked by the Supreme Court to decide on a lower court judge’s request for a special hearing at AIIMS. Accordingly, a judge went to the AIIMS to record the teen’s statement. The rape accused Sengar was also taken to the special courtroom.

Sengar has also been accused of plotting a car crash as his attempts to force her and her family to revoke the charges against him had failed. The girl – along with her lawyer – was critically injured in the crash.

Her family had even moved the Supreme Court seeking protection after receiving constant threats from Sengar’s aides. Following the car accident, the Supreme Court had assigned a special judge for hearing of the case and ordered that the trial be completed within 45 days. The girl was moved to Delhi AIIMS from a hospital in Uttar Pradesh last month and is being treated by a team of doctors.

The court has also given strict instructions to be followed during the special hearing at AIIMS keeping in mind her critical condition.

The BJP was initially reluctant to take any action against Sengar, but eventually expelled him in the face of growing pressure.
