West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will call on Union Home Minister Amit Shah today in New Delhi. The meeting has been scheduled at 1.30 pm as of now.
Banerjee is chief of the Trinamool Congress while Shah heads the Bharatiya Janata Party. This is the first ever meeting that Banerjee will have with Amit Shah.
On Wednesday, Mamata Banerjee had called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and invited him to inaugurate a coal block project in West Bengal’s Birbhum district after Durga Puja and Navratri. She also discussed various projects involving the state and said that it was a non-political meeting.
She also said that she would try to meet Amit Shah today and she had often met the Union Home Minister when she visited Delhi in the past.
The Trinamool Congress and the BJP have been at loggerheads for long, which turned into bitter rivalry in the run up to the Lok Sabha elections. While Banerjee has projected herself and her party as the only political party that can fight the BJP – in Bengal and even nationally – her recent move trying to build a bridge is being criticised by many.
However, Banerjee has said that it is the responsibility of state heads to talk to the government at the Centre on projects and funds as it involves the work and interests of the people. Asked about the “Saradha probe” and “central government agencies”, Banerjee refused to comment yesterday.
