Mamata Banerjee: bypoll results show people want peace and harmony

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today said that the results of the by-elections in the state in which all three seats had been won by her party, is a reflection of people’s preference for unity and harmony. She said that the pride of the Bharatiya Janata Party and its brand of divisive politics had led to this result just a few months after the Lok Sabha polls.
Banerjee, speaking to a news channel, said that she would talk more about the results of the Lok Sabha polls — that she fears involved manipulation — once there is “proof”. However, whatever the results had been in the Lok Sabha, her party had not only overcome the “official” figure by which the BJP was leading, but won even more votes.
She said people want peace and livelihood, but the BJP-led government at the Centre has been moving towards privatisation or closing down PSUs. In addition, there is lynching and an atmosphere of fear due to the threat of NRC. “Lynching is not politics. Threatening people is not politics. People want to live in peace, but they are killing people in Kashmir and driving them out, killing people in other states and forcing them to leave. That can’t make people like you,” she said.
“We must be meek and bow down before people. We are here to serve them and there is no place for pride for political leaders, including our leaders,” she said.
