All four men accused in the gang-rape and murder of the 27-year-old veterinarian in Telengana, were shot dead in the early hours of Friday. Police said that the four were trying to escape during investigation at the spot where the woman’s body had been found.
The four men are accused to have trapped the woman by deflating a tyre of her two-wheeler, offered to help her and then took her to a spot where they raped and murdered her after which they set her body on fire. This took place on November 27 near Hyderabad. The burnt body was found the next morning. The brutal crime horrified and outraged people all over the country and beyond.
The four men – Jolly Naveen (20), Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu (20), Mohammed Arif (26) and Jollu Shiva (20) were drivers and cleaners of trucks. They had been arrested after police identified them from CCTV footage and taken into custody since Wednesday. The four men had been taken to the crime scene by the police in order to reconstruct the crime at around 3 in the morning. This was the place where the charred body of the woman had been found.
Police officers were quoted saying that it was during this time that the four tried to escape. According to police quoted in various reports, the accused tried to snatch weapons from them and attacked them, which had led the police to fire at the men. Officers added that they had been taken to a hospital after calling an ambulance but they died before medical help could be offered. The Telengana law department had asked for a fast-track court trial for the case.
