Arun Jaitley, former finance minister, dies at 66

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley, who was former Union Finance Minister in the Narendra Modi government, died at 12.07 pm on Saturday, according to a press release issued by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He had been admitted to the hospital on August 9.

He was Union Finance Minister from 2014 to 2019. In the earlier BJP lead government when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was Prime Minister, Jaitley had held several portfolios including commerce, law and justice. He was also Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha between 2009 and 2014. He was not made part of the present government in 2019 due to his health condition.

Several top leaders, including President Ram Nath Kovind, had visited him since the time he had been admitted to the hospital.

Arun Jaitley was a senior advocate before he devoted time to full-time politics.
