Assam teacher arrested for “objectionable” social media post on PM

Souradeep Sengupta, a former student of Kolkat’s Presidency Universiy, was arrested on Friday in Assam’s Silchar for attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the backdrop of Delhi violence.
Sengupta worked as a guest lecturer in Gurucharan College of Silchar, Assam. In his Facebook post, he had called Modi a “mass murderer” and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of “trying to recreate Godhra in Delhi”. He wrote that Muslims in Delhi were being “beaten mercilessly” and discriminated in various ways. He also accused BJP of “selling the country off for a few bucks.” In another post, he said, “Hindutva is a cancer.”
Police arrested him after a first information report (FIR) was lodged by a student of the college Sengupta taught in. A group of students started demonstrating inside the college on Friday demanding his removal following which Sengupta resigned. He had posted an apology on Facebook after that and deleted the posts.
A group of students allegedly surrounded his house and started demanding that Sengupta should go live on Facebook and apologise for his posts. He was not home when this happened and returned after his parents called him up. He was arrested by the police when he came back home. Sengupta has been booked under several charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) accusing him with intent of outraging religious feelings and attacking religions among several other acts.
