Satyajit Ray (1921–92) is widely regarded as one of the greatest film-makers of the 20th century. His first film Pather Panchali (1955) won an award at the Cannes Film Festival. Many of his films are acknowledged as all-time classics. He won an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement, and the Bharat Ratna.
