Congress and the Left parties in West Bengal have finalised their seat-sharing formula for the upcoming civic polls in Siliguri and Cooch Behar.
It was decided at a meeting in Siliguri earlier this week that Congress will contest in 15 of the 47 seats of Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) and the Left parties in 26. The decision was reached after a series of meetings between the leaders of both parties, said Congress’ Darjeeling district general secretary Jeevan Majumdar.
Of the 26 seats, Communist Party of India (Marxist) will contest in 20 seats while its allies Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Forward Bloc will contest in six seats.
The seat-sharing formula has been decided for all the six municipalities of Cooch Behar too.
Of the 20 seats in Cooch Behar municipality, the Left parties will contest in 15 and the Congress in five. In Tufanganj, the Left will contest in 10 and the Congress in two out of a total 12 seats. In Dinhata, out of a total of 16 seats, the Left and the Congress will contest in 13 and three seats respectively. In the 11-seat Haldibari municipality, the Left will field candidates in six and the Congress in five seats. In Mathabahanga, the Left and the Congress will contest in nine and three seats of the 12 total seats. In Mekhliganj, the Left will field candidates in six seats while the Congress will field candidates in three seats.
District CPM secretary of Cooch Behar, Ananta Roy, said that work is already on for selection of candidates.
