The Centre on Wednesday moved the apex court of the country to seek transfer of all the petitions challenging the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) from the High Courts to the Supreme Court. The court will hear the appeal on Friday.
There have been at least 60 petitions filed in the Supreme Court challenging different aspects of the CAA that was passed by both houses of the Parliament towards the end of 2019.
According to the apex court, prima facie it was of the opinion that the High Courts should hear the respective petitions that had been moved before them, and the Supreme Court could look into them in case there were some conflicts of opinion. However, the Centre has said that there will be a problem as different High Courts might have conflicting views and lawyers would be moving to different states for the hearing. To this, the Supreme Court has categorically mentioned that lawyers moving to different states for the hearings was not its priority.
Protests erupted last month across the country against the CAA and alleged police brutality against students.
