Centre to take control of vaccination, provide free vaccines to states from June 21, says PM Modi
25% vaccines can be bought by private hospitals directly from manufacturers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday announced that the Centre will take back control of vaccination from the states and provide free vaccines to them in the next two weeks. This will come into effect from June 21.
“The Centre is taking back control of vaccination now, and it will be implemented in the next two weeks. The Centre will provide free vaccines to states for all above 18 years. From June 21, the Centre will provide free vaccines to states,” PM Modi announced in an address to the nation.
Those who want to pay can go to private hospitals, and the latter can buy 25 per cent of the doses directly from manufacturers. However, “75 per cent of vaccination will be free and under the Centre, and 25 per cent may be paid by private hospitals,” PM Modi announced.
Modi said that India’s fight against the second wave of the COVID-19 continues. “Against an unseen enemy, our biggest weapon is maintaining protocols like wearing masks and distancing. Vaccines are our safety armour,” he said, adding though, that production is limited compared to the demand.
